Walking Together: A Reflection on Sangha Day by Ying Cong

In the vast journey of spiritual development, one element that I had long overlooked was the significance and power of community. Over the years, my solitary approach to self-growth has undergone a transformative shift. Today, the observance of Sangha Day serves as a poignant reminder of the importance of walking together with fellow seekers.

Sangha Day's roots are deeply embedded in Buddhist history when the Buddha gathered 1,250 enlightened disciples on a full moon day in the third lunar month for ordination and delivered teachings that would form the foundation of the monastic community. The Dhammapada verse states: To avoid all evil, to cultivate good, to purify one's mind - This is the teaching of the Buddhas.

This day celebrates unity among spiritual fris who are united by a shared commitment to this teachingthe Buddha taught Ananda that admirable friship, companionship, and camaraderie constitute the whole holy life. However, it was only upon encountering hera fellow seekerthat I began to understand and embrace community in my spiritual journey.

The Scout Camp Retreat: My Solitary Quest

My spiritual journey began at a makeshift retreat center, previously a scout camp away from Singapore's bustling urban environment. Surrounded by fellow practitioners, I embarked on a 10-day silent retreat determined to navigate this solo. But it was amidst this solitude that an unexpected connection was forged.

On the final day of the retreat, amidst broken silence, our paths crossed. She caught my attention while perusing Dhamma books neatly arranged on shelves, sparking a hesitant yet intriguing conversation about meditation experiences. Before parting ways at the camp's departure, we exchanged numbers, and it led to the beautiful union with my fiancee today.

The Gradual Integration of Community

When we started dating, couple meditations became our regular activity. Over time, her introduction to Buddhist fris expanded my world beyond solo practice into a community setting. I began grasping that just as the 1250 arahants found strength in unity, so too did I find growth and support in this collective spiritual exploration.

Group sittings were more than accountability; they became a source of shared learning and mutual inspiration. The selfless acts of service during food offerings not only deepened my understanding of Dana but also motivated me to give more freely. And amidst the imperfections, being surrounded by conscientious practitioners offered timely reminders and encouragement.

The Transformation of Sangha Day

This journey from solitude to community has transformed my perspective on Sangha Day. It is no longer merely a historical commemoration but a celebration of spiritual camaraderie that enriches my path.

To me, this day symbolizes the transformationfrom walking alone in pursuit of enlightenment to embracing unity with fellow travelers. It underscores the joy and growth inherent in communal practice and the shared exploration of the Dhamma.

May Sangha Day inspire us all to reflect on the transformative power of community support, reminding us that while each individual's path is personal, it is our spiritual fris who illuminate our journey and provide strength whenever we falter.
