About Master Sheng Yen
At the time of his passing in February 2009, Master Sheng Yen was recognized as a pre-eminent spiritual leader in the world. inheritor of Chinese Buddhism with a lineage tracing back to both Linji and Caodong schools of Chan Buddhism, he spent over three decades spreading Buddhist teachings across Twan, the United States, and Europe. His global presence is further highlighted by his leadership roles in organizing meditation retreats worldwide.
Not only was Master Sheng Yen a master teacher, but he also excelled as an academic, earning advanced degrees in Buddhist Studies and Buddhist Literature from Rissho University in Japan. Throughout his lifetime, he authored over one hundred scholarly works and popular books written in both Chinese and English, many of which have been translated into multiple languages. A true testament to his dedication was the establishment and leadership of Dharma Drum Mountn, which has emerged as a significant Buddhist center in Twan.
Master Sheng Yen's influence transced religious boundaries; he served as chrperson of the World Council of Religious Leaders, signifying the global acknowledgment of his contributions to world religion. His lifelong mission was to revitalize forgotten teachings and principles found within the Buddha’s Dharma by conveying them using contemporary language and ideas.
In Master Sheng Yen's personal journey, he sought to connect with people through learning and insight, aspiring that everyone would gn a deep understanding of the Dharma rather than merely receive it. His work med to spread not just knowledge but also a spirit akin to that which was lost in the past.
He imparted wisdom by walking the talk himself, modeling his teachings through his actions, providing invaluable guidance to disciples on speech and conduct, and nurturing them through wholehearted commitment to one singular method or master.
Master Sheng Yen's legacy serves as a reminder of the significance of spiritual leadership, educational outreach, and the harmonious integration between religious practices and contemporary society.
