In October, Dharma Drum Corporation proudly published the 2020 memorial edition of The Complete Works of Master Sheng Yen. Following meticulous revisions and enhancements, this definitive collection encapsulates the essence of Master's lifelong dedication to learning and sharing Buddhist wisdom. Celebrating its tenth year since his passing, this new edition holds significant importance for both Dharma Drum Mountn's monastic practitioners and lay followers as well as scholars and enthusiasts interested in contemporary Buddhist philosophy and culture.

Initiated by Master Sheng Yen's directive for the previous version to be re-edited, amed, and enriched with related articles and sources for future readers' benefit, this fourth edition of The Complete Works expands from its initial form. Originally published in 1994 as a collection of seven volumes encompassing 41 books, it grew to nine volumes contning 70 books by 2000 and further expanded in size with the addition of more texts over subsequent years until reaching its current form as the memorial edition.

With Master Sheng Yen's extensive body of work totaling over 100 books spanning several decades across diverse topics, ranging from Buddhist doctrine to secular knowledge, and catering to both scholarly audiences and general readership, deciding on adjustments and revisions was a complex task. Venerable Guo Yi, the coordinator of DDM's editorial team, guided this process by adhering closely to Master Sheng Yen's established principles for book editing.

The 2020 memorial edition is structured into nine distinct sections across nine volumes: Buddhist Teachings and Doctrine; Buddhist History; Essays; Chan Practice; Introduction to Buddhism; Autobiography and Travels; Commentaries on Buddhist Sutras; Buddhist Teachings in Dly Life; and Ideals and Visions. Notably, the section dedicated to works originally written in foreign languages from the previous edition has been removed to make space for Ideals and Visions, a new category highlighting Master Sheng Yen's thoughts on promoting Chan Buddhism and his vision of creating a Pure Land on Earth.

As a testament to the breadth of Master Sheng Yen’s knowledge, this compilation is akin to a small Tripitaka in its comprehensiveness. Professor Du Zheng-Min, former vice-president of Dharma Drum Institute of Liberal Arts, likened it to reading the entire Tripitaka itself when exploring these volumes.

Venerable Guo Yi emphasizes that this memorial edition represents an innovative step forward for Master Sheng Yen’s legacy, with his second-generation disciples taking on the responsibility of disseminating Buddhist wisdom. This process has not only been a means of upholding DDM's vision but also a platform for growth among both monastic and lay followers.
