Generation Z's Loneliness Epidemic: Insights from SGI USA Youth Leaders

A recent study conducted by the global healthcare provider Cigna has revealed that the majority of adults above the age of eighteen consider themselves to be lonely, and notably, Generation Zthe individuals born between mid-1990s and early 2000sstand at the forefront of this issue. The research underscores a significant health disparity, equating the impact of loneliness on mental well-being with that of smoking up to fifteen cigarettes dly.

SGI-USA Youth Leader Olivia Sto engaged Amelia Gonzalez, Ryan Hayashi, and Lillian I in dialogue about the growing loneliness epidemic they've observed among young people, as well as the solutions discovered through Buddhist practice.

Amelia Gonzalez: Thank you for inviting us! Based in New York City, I serve as the student division's young women leader within SGI-USA, providing support to college and university students across the country. Moreover, recently graduated from university myself.


The loneliness epidemic has been a pressing concern in recent times, with Cigna's study highlighting that most adults above eighteen perceive themselves as lonely. Especially affecting Generation Z, those born between 1995 and the early 2000s, this epidemic has been found to have profound negative health impacts equivalent to chronic smoking.
