During this period of uncertnty brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic, I find myself frequently contemplating Pema Chodron's book Living Beautifully with Uncertnty and Change. I used to confuse the title slightly as my mind was often filled with fear alongside feelings of uncertnty.
In her book, Pema introduces what are known in Tibetan Buddhist tradition as the Three Commitments. These three methods are designed to help us engage with life’s chaotic, unstable, dynamic, and challenging aspects in a thoughtful manner that benefits ourselves and others:
The first commitment is made towards living an ethical life, carefully considering our actions and words, ming not to cause harm to ourselves or others.
The second commitment encourages living compassionately towards self and others, nurturing kindness and support.
The third commitment involves viewing every situation we encounterwhether it be an up or downas a chance for personal growth and development.
It is the latter part of this third commitment that often poses challenges. The downs in life are generally not events towards which I t to have welcoming feelings. However, amidst this pandemic period, there has been an abundance of opportunities for practice in navigating life’s unwanted challenges with positivity and purpose.
In my adult life, I have increasingly recognized the power of sharing authentically with others in groups that provide safety and support. During high-stress times, we need more than just information; we require a community where respectful, deep listening and genuine sharing occur. Connecting with individuals who share similar intentions creates an environment where we can see each other’s struggles, obstacles, and successes as opportunities for learning rather than barriers to our growth.
I am deeply grateful for the teachings that allow me to view reality more clearlyunderstanding the laws of nature and cause and effect. I am thankful for Sanghathe diverse community of individuals who come together with a shared intention to practice these istic values in their dly lives, ultimately ming towards health, happiness, and wellbeing.
I often find myself appreciating this gift of sharing our experiences, challenges, and successes within the supportive context of Sangha. It is through such connections that we realize we are all navigating similar waters and that true transformation doesn't come from perfection but from supporting each other in embodying these teachings for our own benefit and the benefit of others.
