Welcome to the Heartwood Sangha!
Founded under His Holiness Penor Rinpoche's guidance 25 years ago, Heartwood Sangha is a community of practitioners and students dedicated to integrating ancient Buddhist teachings into contemporary American culture. Our goal is to make wisdom accessible, relevant, and inspiring for all who seek it.
Our History
Meditation has been at the core of our vision since our inception in 1999long before meditation centers became commonplace in the Chicagoland area. Under the leadership of Nancy Floy and Larry Akey, we have grown into one of the longest-standing active meditation programs in the region. We are blessed with a diverse array of visiting teachers from various spiritual traditions who share their wisdom with us.
Vision
At Heartwood Sangha, we foster an open, inclusive, and community-oriented environment. We believe that the path to enlightenment should not only be personally transformative but also socially engaged. Our mission is to create spaces where people can practice in harmony and study together, benefiting from a wide range of teachings and practices that span different Buddhist schools and spiritual traditions.
We are committed to offering unique programs led by knowledgeable teachers who integrate Mahamudra and Dzogchen principles with other Buddhist and non-Buddhist texts. Our m is to bl our dly practice with the joys and challenges of life, integrating mindfulness into every aspect of our existence.
Guided by ethical responsibilities rooted in Buddhism, we strive for shared leadership, transparency, and accountability. We are dedicated to upholding the principle that harm should not be inflictedthis includes all forms of abuse, whether physical, emotional, sexual, or financial.

Mission
Our mission is clear: we m to cultivate happiness and liberation for ourselves and all sentient beings. We provide tools and teachings from Buddhist and other spiritual traditions that lead to a more open-hearted, compassionate, and fulfilling life. This includes offering classes on mindfulness, wisdom, and compassion, hosting regular meditation opportunities including retreats, public talks, study programs in our shrine room, and more.
Heartwood Sangha stands as a sanctuary for survivors of guru or teacher abuse from Tibetan Buddhist traditions like Shambhala and Rigpa. We are here to provide support and resources through Nancy Floy at 847-491-9858. Our organization is a non-profit, officially recognized under section 501c3 of the Internal Revenue Code, which means all donations are tax-deductible.
