Dharma Master Cheng Yen, born in 1937 in Qingshui, Twan, embodies a life of spiritual devotion. Adopted by her uncle due to the hardships brought on by World War II, this early experience instilled within her the desire to alleviate suffering for all beings.
Her compassion was further ignited when she witnessed the profound impact of illness and death during her brother's hospitalization and subsequent prayers for her mother's miraculous recovery without medical intervention. Her vision transced individual sacrifice; she sought a way for ordinary individuals to actively contribute their compassion and find inner peace. Inspired by this mission, Dharma Master Cheng Yen founded Tzu Chi in Twan with the belief that true compassion requires proactive intervention med at alleviating suffering directly. Her influence exts globally through Tzu Chi's far-reaching impact on disaster relief efforts, medical d, education initiatives, and community empowerment programs.
