Dharma Master Cheng Yen, born in 1937 in Qingshui, Twan, embodies a life of spiritual devotion. Adopted by her uncle due to the hardships brought on by World War II, this early experience instilled within her the desire to alleviate suffering for all beings.

Her compassion was further ignited when she witnessed the profound impact of illness and death during her brother's hospitalization and subsequent prayers for her mother's miraculous recovery without medical intervention. This pivotal moment led her astray from her family home at a young age, seeking refuge in Buddhist monastic life as a response to her father's unexpected passing.

In pursuit of true wisdom, Dharma Master Cheng Yen was guided by the teachings of Dharma Master Yin Shun, who ordned her as a nun and instilled within her the core principle: Buddhism first, for all beings. This profound guidance has been the guiding force behind her lifelong commitment to compassionate action and selfless service.

Her vision transced individual sacrifice; she sought a way for ordinary individuals to actively contribute their compassion and find inner peace.
