Shewatsel Teaching Ground in Leh, Ladakh, UT India - His Holiness the Dal Lama reached the pavilion at approximately 7:00 am today ahead of his scheduled activities. Wishing to ensure he completes all necessary preliminary rituals prior to the Avalokiteshvara Empowerment ceremony, he anticipated his arrival with the intent of honoring this divine practice deeply connected to Tibetan culture and spirituality.
As thousands of attees gathered, numbering roughly seventy thousand souls, His Holiness addressed them emphasizing the significance of compassion in Buddhism. He encouraged participants to recite the six-syllable mantra 'Om mani padme hung' during the rituals that precede him bestowing the Avalokiteshvara Empowerment on everyone.
In his discourse, His Holiness revealed an intimate connection between himself and Avalokiteshvara through their actions of body, speech, and mind. Highlighting compassion as a central pillar in all religious traditions, he underlined its transformative power on individuals, asserting that true self-interest is not just confined to personal welfare but exts to the service of others.
To formally recognize His Holiness's role as an embodiment of Avalokiteshvara, representatives from the Drukpa Kagyu lineage and other institutions presented silk scarves. This was followed by a traditional chanting session for the 'Prayer of Three Continuous Practices' and recitation of 'Heart Sutra', which are integral to Tibetan Buddhist rituals.
During this significant event at the Shewatsel Teaching Ground in Leh, Ladakh UT India, His Holiness emphasized that receiving the Avalokiteshvara empowerment as part of Action Tantras Kriya Tantras was a commitment towards leading a meaningful life. He encouraged those present and following remotely to cultivate kindness and strive for welfare of all sentient beings.
To initiate this empowerment process, His Holiness led everyone through the steps for generating an awakening mind - a foundational step toward attning enlightenment. He explned that combining this mindset with understanding of 'emptiness' is essential in the path towards enlightenment.
Upon completion of the Empowerment ritual, His Holiness advised attees to recite 'Om mani padme hung' either ten thousand times or at least several thousand times dly for peace of mind.
A grand thanksgiving ceremony ensued led by Acharya Stanzin Wang and other representatives from various organizations, institutions, and regions of Ladakh. This was followed by a heartfelt song of gratitude performed by local artists, reflecting the deep appreciation and connection shared with His Holiness.
Concluding this three-day series of teachings, His Holiness made sure to acknowledge every attee seated around him - north, south, east, and west alike, waving warmly from an open golfcart. The gesture illustrated his genuine affection for all those present and his commitment to fostering a sense of unity and peace.
