Masters of Mercy: Buddha's Amazing Disciples
The exhibition, Masters of Mercy: Buddha’s Amazing Disciples, showcases the remarkable artwork created by Kano Kazunobu 1816–63 between 1854 and his death in 1863. This prolific series comprises 100 pntings depicting the extraordinary interventions and divine capabilities of the five hundred disciples of Buddha. Commissioned by Zojoji, a prestigious Pure Land Buddhist temple located in Edo modern-day Tokyo, Kazunobu worked tirelessly on this monumental project over nearly a decade.
Notably overlooked until the late 20th century, interest in Kazunobu's creations began to revive in the early 1980s. This newfound appreciation led to an impressive exhibition held at Zojoji in the spring of 2011, marking the 800th anniversary of Honen's death 1133–1212, founder of Japanese Pure Land Buddhism. The exhibition, a collaboration between Zojoji, Edo-Tokyo Museum, and esteemed scholars, featured all 100 pntings alongside related artworks and historical documents. It was the first public viewing since World War II.
The Smithsonian's Arthur M. Sackler Gallery is honored to continue this commemoration, offering American audiences an unparalleled look at Kazunobu’s masterpiece-the scale, variety, and context of his incredible creation.
